National Historic Landmark, Penn Center Historic District: Designated National Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places
Located on St. Helena Island, one of the most beautiful and historically distinct of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Penn Center sits at the heart of Gullah culture. The 50 acre historic campus of Penn School was once the location of one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves, and currently serves as one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today.
Cummings & McCrady was hired to restore the Frissell Community Building into a usable meeting hall. This tabby structure, surrounded by ancient oak trees, now hosts receptions and community events. The work on the building included new restrooms, handicap access; restoration of the interior, windows and doors; and improvements to MEP systems.
The restoration and rehabilitation of the Shed Building provides an extension of the museum and allows space for school groups and other educational pursuits.
