Penn Center Shed Building, St. Helena Island, SC Located on St. Helena Island, one of the most beautiful and historically distinct of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Penn Center sits at the heart of Gullah culture. The 50 acre historic campus of Penn School was once the location of one of the country's first schools for freed slaves, and currently serves as one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. Cummings and McCrady, Inc. was hired to renovate what was at one time a storage shed. The Shed Building now serves as a gallery and educational and meeting space for the Penn Center museum. |
