Fireproof Building, Charleston, SC Designed in 1822 by Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument, the Fireproof Building was in need of repair and restoration. As part of the long term plan for the preservation of this National Historic Landmark, the South Carolina Historical Society employed Cummings & McCrady to conduct a structural assessment of the building and develop plans for the repair, restoration, and rehabilitation of the exterior envelope followed by interior restoration. After completion of necessary roof repairs, plans were prepared for the sophisticated environmental control systems essential for preserving the Society’s valuable artifacts and documents. By carefully restoring the exterior and interior elements and finishes, the building has been restored to its earlier post-1886 earthquake appearance. Special attention has been given to the exterior materials and surfaces during the project to faithfully respect the significant features. C&M’s care in this undertaking is evident in the unobtrusive integration of the modern environmental control systems into this vaulted brick masonry structure. Cummings & McCrady has also been instrumental in the study and preservation of another Mills building in Charleston, The Old City Jail. Cummings and McCrady, Inc. was awarded a Carolopolis Award for the restoration of this building.
