Darlington Carnegie Library, Darlington, SC In April 2006, Cummings & McCrady, Inc. was commissioned by the City of Darlington to inspect the existing Carnegie Library and provide a Conditions Assessment Report. The primary intent of the report was to develop a prioritized listing of repair work. Following the Conditions Assessment Study, the project is now in preliminary design stages in order to preserve and reuse this historic building. The original Darlington County Library was constructed in 1920 with money provided from the Carnegie Foundation. Today the building is one of only 14 Carnegie funded libraries in the state of South Carolina. At the time of its construction, the library was one of the most modern libraries in South Carolina. In 1939, an expansion nearly doubled the size of the building, which is now approximately 6800 square feet. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the buildings comprising the St. John’s Historic District. The old library has been vacant since the new library opened down the street in the late 1980’s. |
