USC Maxcy College, Columbia , SC On the “Horseshoe” at the University of South Carolina, Maxcy College is an integral part of the historic heart of the Columbia campus. The building was constructed in the early 1900’s and named in honor of Dr. Jonathan Maxcy, President of the institution in the early part of the nineteenth century. Cummings & McCrady renovated and restored the facility in 1997 to better serve the Honors College at USC. This work integrated historical accuracy with provisions for the demands of a modern university facility: flexible, high-speed data transmission; efficient environmental controls; student privacy, and ease of upkeep. Designed to comply with the requirements of ADA for general access to common elements, Maxcy College housing features fully accessible dormitory units for disabled students. In 1998, Cummings & McCrady, Inc. was awarded the Historical Columbia Foundation Preservation Award for work on this facility.
