Charleston County Public Services Building, Charleston, SC Completed in 2001, this 165,000 sq. ft. public services building provides the citizens of Charleston County with a central location for all county transactions, from business licenses to building permits. Also included is the Emergency Management Operations Center. This center and allied spaces are equipped with on-site emergency power, communication, and redundant uninterruptible power systems. It is designed to be shared by local, state, and national officials during threats from natural or man-made events. The entry lobby is the main orienting feature of this three-story building. Each of the floors pass through this space, allowing visitors clear orientation as they use the building. The space is organized with the most widely used departments on the first floor; County Council Chambers, legislative offices, and smaller meeting rooms on the second floor; and the least public areas located on the third floor. The exterior of the building is equipped with reinforced windows, wall, and roof structures to resist a major hurricane, insuring continuity of emergency services during an event. The entire building is equipped with redundant high-speed data transmission systems allowing for flexible expansion and upgrading of systems that service the public and emergency operations. |
