Grace Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC Grace Episcopal Church, designed by E.B. White and dating from 1847, has been the subject of many projects completed by Cummings & McCrady. After Hurricane Hugo, we repaired and restored the Exterior and Sanctuary. In 1990, we added the Atrium and Offices in the rear, and in 2000, the Columbarium / Bell Tower was created. The additions were part of a Master Plan for the expansion of the church campus developed by our office in 1986. Future work includes a new Parish Hall with offices, a youth center, and a rooftop terrace. A structural analysis is currently being performed as part of our ongoing master plan services. The Atrium, designed in compatible style with the church, acts as the main hub of activity during the week for Parish Offices and School functions. The Columbarium / Bell Tower is at once contemporary and traditional. It houses memorial crypts as well as a set of change ringing bells. The structure is set in a paved “Garth” between the sanctuary and present Parish Hall. The interior was restored and repaired with new lighting and sound systems were installed. Historically correct details & appointments enhance the beauty of this superb sanctuary. Our work on Grace church has won numerous
