St. Luke's Chapel, Sewanee, TN The School of Theology at The University of the South was originally located in St. Luke's Hall adjacent to the School of Theology Chapel. When the school moved to another part of the University campus, the chapel was only used by a very few students for Compline. The music department is now located in St. Luke's Hall, and the chapel has been assigned to the music department as a recital hall, with the provision that it remain as a consecrated space. Cummings & McCrady was invited to design the reordering of the chapel while remaining sensitive to the emotional and political issues surrounding a major change in usage. The scope of work was expanded to include the replacement of the slate roof. The interior work included the removal of the collegiate pew scheme, the removal of the organ, and the repair of plaster. The floor was refinished, the walls were repainted, and the lighting was upgraded. By removing the organ, we were able to create a large opening to the sacristy to allow a grand piano to move to the sanctuary from storage. The altar can also be moved in or out. The reredos was retained and will be incorporated in a new organ which will occupy the space on either end of the reredos. The old pews were moved to the University chapel and St. Luke's now has cathedral type movable chairs.
