St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC

The white steeple of historic St. Michael's Episcopal Church has welcomed visitors to Charleston for the past two hundred and thirty years. Cummings & McCrady is proud to have been chosen for the complete restoration of this historically and socially significant landmark.

Work included:
- Restoration of the wooden spire from lantern support structure to the tip of the lightning rod.
- Rebuilding of the gold leaf ball and lightning protection system.
- Complete stripping of interior and exterior architectural wood details (cornice column capitals, cherub faces, balustrades, etc.).
- Masonry repair.
- Stucco and plaster repair.
- Relaying of multicolored slate shingles and replacing copper gutters.

Additionally, the four clock faces and clock hands have been restored to their 1764 condition and appearance. St. Michael's clock was restored by Smith of Derby, England, who also maintains "Big Ben" in London. The bells were sent to Whitechapel foundry in London, where their rusted iron crown staples were ground out and replaced with bronze which is better suited to the salt air environment.

Cummings & McCrady is currently working on the Parish Hall renovation at St. Michael's.

Cummings & McCrady, Inc. was awarded the Historic Charleston Foundation Robert N.S. and Patti Foos Whitelaw Founders Award and a Carolopolis Award for Restoration.
