First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Charleston, SC

Built in 1841, First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, with its dual towers and prominent portico, was damaged by an earthquake in 1886 and a tornado in 1938. Numerous additions have also been added to the church.

Cummings & McCrady, Inc. was responsible for structural improvements to the portico roof, both masonry towers, and the sanctuary walls. The reroofing of the copper clad domes and portico was also done by Cummings & McCrady.

After successfully completing repair work on the existing historic building, Cummings & McCrady was contracted to prepare a spatial program and master plan of the site in historic Charleston.  Authorization has been given to C&M to design a three story Educational Building to serve the weekday kindergarten functions as well as Sunday school classes and youth programs.  The new building is being designed to be contextual with the existing facilities, to improve site circulation, and to relate sympathetically with the surrounding massing.
